David Machado was born in Lisbon in 1978. He is the author of a novel, The giant’s theatre of fantasy, and a book of short stories, Possible stories. In 2005 his children’s story The night of the invented animals receivedthe Branquinho da Fonseca Prize, awarded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the weekly Expresso. Since then he has written two more children’s stories, The flying bed’s four commanders and A green man in a very deep hole. In 2007 his short story “A noite repetida do Comandante” [The Commander’s repeated night] was chosen as Portugal’s entry in the Scritture Giovani section of the Italian Festivaletteratura, in which the Guardian Hay Festival (UK), the Bjørnsonfestivalen Molde og Nesset (Norway), and the Internationales Literaturfestival Berlin (Germany) collaborated. He has translated works by Adolfo Bioy Casares and Mario Benedetti. |

Luísa Costa Gomes was born on June 16, 1954. She received a degree in Philosophy from the Faculdade de Letras de Lisboa in 1976. She has taught Philosophy, creative writing (narrative, short story, and theater), and literary translation; written and produced programs on philosophy and literature for Portuguese radio and television; and been involved in the creation of web resources related to Portuguese literature, including an online library of the Portuguese short story.
She has received numerous grants from the Gulbenkian Foundation and the Ministry of Culture. Her translations include the screenplays of dozens of films; numerous American, English, and French plays; and short stories by Nabokov, Robert Coover, Woody Allen, Elizabeth Bishop, Jerome K. Jerome, O. Henry, and John Updike. Luísa Costa Gomes has published several dozen short stories, seven novels, eight plays, two books for children, and numerous articles on contemporary affairs and literature, as well as interviews and chronicles. Her work has been translated into Catalan, Dutch, French, and English. |

In addition to book illustrations, Afonso Cruz has made animated films of his own and for the advertising industry as well as composing and performing in the blues/roots band The Soaked Lamb.
He is the author of a satirical thriller, A carne de Deus [The Flesh of God], 2008; a fictional encyclopedia, Enciclopédia da estória universal [Encyclopedia of World History], 2009; and Os livros que devoraram o meu pai, 2010 (Maria Rosa Colaço Literary Prize).
In June 1971, in Figueira da Foz, he was completely reborn. In subsequent years he attended the António Arroio School, the Institute of Belas Artes in Lisbon, and the Instituto Superior de Artes Plásticas in Madeira.
In recent years, he has become increasingly well-known as an illustrator of children’s books. He has traveled to over fifty countries. He lives in the country and has two children.

After graduating in Philosophy in Lisbon, he studied Journalism and Creative Writing in London and New York. He currently works as free-lance journalist, translator and scriptwriter for films and television series.
João Tordo won the Young Creator’s Prize in 2001 and published his first novel O Livro dos Homens sem Luz [The Book of Men in Darkness] in 2004 with general critical acclaim, being hailed as one of the most original and promising Portuguese novelists of his generation.
With Hotel Memória [Memory Hotel] in 2006 and especially with his last novel, As três vidas [The three lives], João Tordo has consolidated his reputation of extremely gifted novelist and is appointed by the critics as a “shooting star” of Portuguese contemporary fiction.
In 2009 he won the Saramago Prize with As três vidas [The three lives]. The book has just been published in France by Actes Sud. |

He began his journalistic career in Coimbra in 1988 and joined the founders of Público the following year, going on to become the newspaper’s Luanda correspondent. As a reporter he covered conflicts in Angola, Rwanda, Zaire/DRC, Western Sahara, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Liberia, the Ivory Coast, Afghanistan and the former Yugoslavia, winning Portugal’s Bordalo Prize for Print Journalism in 2000.Between 2007 and 2009 he was posted in East Timor as Dili correspondent for the Agência Lusa de Notícias (the official news agency of Portugal), before becoming the agency’s man in Paris, where he currently lives.
He has had several works of fiction published, Baía dos Tigres (Bay of Tigers: A Journey Through War-torn Angola) in 1999, which won the PEN Club Fiction prize, Atlântico (Atlantic) in 2003, and Lenin Oil (Lenin Oil) in 2006, the latter in collaboration with illustrator Alain Corbel. He has also written several books of reportage, incluiding Ilhas de Fogo (Islands of Fire) in 2001 and Madre Cacau – Timor (Mother Cacau – Timor) in 2004, and Schwarz Licht, Passagen durch Westafrika (Black Light – Journey through Western Africa), with photographs by Wolf Böwig, which was published by Brandes & Apsel Verlag in Frankfurt in 2006. |
