The DGLAB is the Portuguese body responsible for the national nominations for the following international prizes:
- ALMA – Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award
- Best Book Design from all over the World
- Ibero-American SM Prize for Children’s and Youth Literature (Premio Iberoamericano SM de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil)
The
Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) is the world’s largest children’s literature award of its kind. It was created in 2002 by the Swedish government to promote every child’s right to great stories. This global award is given annually to a person or organisation for their outstanding contribution to children’s and young adult literature.

The competition
Best book design from all over the world is held by Stiftung Buchkunst (German foundation for book design). Despite cultural differences in book production, this competition is an attempt to compare the technical and aesthetic level as well as the appropriate and artistic design of books beyond national borders. The focus is on international exchange and mutual stimulation. Portuguese nominees are the winners and those selected in the national competition Book Design Award (Prémio Design de Livro).

The
Ibero-American SM Prize for Children’s and Youth Literature was launched in 2005 with the aim of promoting children’s and youth literature in Ibero-America. Candidates are living authors who have a valuable work of creation for children and young people, written in Spanish or Portuguese, whether narrative, poetry, dramaturgy or picture book.
